DUBLIN DISPATCH MAY/JUNE 2007
New face at Snowtown
An Authorised Officer with the Northern & Yorke Natural Resources Management Board has recently taken up office in Snowtown. Bruce Clark is based in the CFS offices on Adelaide Road at Snowtown, and will be working with local land managers to help them manage pest plants and animals on their properties.
People can come to me for supplies of fox bait and information about rabbit control and chemicals,’ said Bruce.
‘‘ I can also help with weed and plant identification – some weeds are proclaimed but there are plenty of agricultural weeds that land managers need to recognise and control,’ he said.
The Board has groups of authorised officers in Yorke Peninsula, the Lower North and Upper North regions. Bruce belongs to the Board’s Lower North Team, which is responsible for the region from Mallala to Jamestown. His own area covers the towns of Snowtown, Blythe, Lochiel, Brinkworth, Yacka and Spalding.‘
If anyone would like information about animal and plant control matters in this area, please phone Bruce on 886 52166 or 0417 879 558.

I am very pleased to report that our cake stall at this years Strawberry Fete was very successful.
The annual March Appeal letters were delivered by hand to the house holds in Mallala, while others have been posted. If you did not receive a letter and wish to donate to Red Cross please give me a call on 88627018 and one will be forwarded to you.
Before our meeting in April there was a linen party. This was quite successful despite the fact the secretary forgot to send out the invitations. On the 18th April we catered for Terry Jenkins clearing sale. I have much pleasure in reporting that we cleared $1200-00
We will be having a morning tea on the 9th May at 10am; the entertainment will be the West Croydon Singers. They entertained us last year and we were asked to invite the group back again this year. We would like as many people to come along and enjoy this great group. The 9th of May is the last function for our Red Cross baby Elly, daughter of Kate (daughter of Tom and Leanne McArdle) and Jamie Baker (son of Colleen and Rodney Baker)
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 13th June and will be our AGM. We invite you to come along and join our group and help raise money for Red Cross.

EDITORIAL
It is almost three years now since with much trepidation, I volunteered to take on the responsibility of producing this bi-monthly newsletter. With no specialised news print training, my only experience, up until then, had been thirty five years of either writing articles or reporting events for various news papers or club newsletters.
To my amazement, my computer skills have improved some what, but still have a way to go. Articles are now submitted from members of organizations within the Hundred of Dublin boundaries on a regular basis, and there is wonderful support from the retail sector. In addition, there are forty five copies posted to former residents and interested persons who look forward to receiving them —spelling mistakes and all
Unfortunately in the last March /April issue some unbelievable clangers crept in .Goodness only knows how my mind was working-or rather not working. I really do not understand how all the mistakes happened, because in the majority of these mistakes I know the correct information.
Firstly I misunderstood a conversation concerning the water usage of the Dublin CFS Station, then I had Shirley Sowerby married to a Brian, and not Barry. Elaine instead of sister in law Irene Starr who helped out at this years Strawberry Fete. Finally it was not Doss and Gerry Collin’s wedding in August 1954, but Phyllis and Bob Jarmyn’s in February 1953, when it was so hot that a number of guests visited Parham Beach to wade in the cool water before attending their reception in the Dublin Institute.
Please, I do hope you all accept my sincere apologies ,especially the Dublin CFS members, particularly Mary Groeke and Captain Trevor Schiller for all the trouble and upset. I assure you the misinformation was not printed deliberately
From the outcome of the above mistakes the Dispatch.is now being proof read. Hopefully these kinds of errors will not occur again.

Real estate agent Valera Evans and her husband Jim celebrated both their fortieth wedding anniversary and forty years of living in Australia (they flew out of Ireland the day they were married) in March when they had a romantic evening at home and toasted the future with a bottle of Dublin History Group wine.

Danny Gramazio officially graduated as a qualified butcher in February. On Feb.20th Helen and Gerry took Danny and out to dinner to celebrate this momentous occasion. Danny gained third place in his class.

Gwen Bell of Thompson Beach, is well known for her love of life and give it a go dare devil attitude. Well some months ago Gwen agreed to join eleven other friends of the touring home organisation that the Bell’s belong to, and bare all for a set of photographs for a calendar. Good on you Gwen you have so much more courage than the majority of your fellow residents.

Road and street names have been appearing gradually over the Mallala Council district over the past two years costing $30,000 so far. The majority now have named signs that have the council’s logo included.

Ann McLean was hostess to the second dinner at the Dublin Hotel on March 13th to raise money for the Starlight Foundation. Sixteen residents attended, enjoying the food, company ,and sampling the skincare and aromatherapy products that were available for purchase. Those present learnt from Ann more about the projects that help bring dreams become reality, for children that are either handicapped or suffer a life threatening illness. The profit from all sales went to the Foundation.

Part time bar man from the Dublin Hotel, Uncle Sam Dunstan, has a hidden talent—acting. Sam was one of the districts local identities who were members of the cast of Hisstory, this years production of the Mallala Institute Committee, in late March. portraying Randi Ryder. Aaron Jenkin, from the Dublin Mobil Roadhouse, is another talented gentleman; Aaron played Mr Butterworth in the same performance. Congratulations to you all. The play was most enjoyable, and Carol, you took on an enormous job offering to write this years production. You did a terrific job!!

Carol and Roger Wyatt of Pt. Parham were the recipients of the Mallala District Council’s Community Development Board’s February Citizen of the Month Award. The Coastal Area representative on the Board, Barbara Reid, presented the certificate to both Carol and Roger early in March. Their combined, tireless dedication to voluntarily looking after the caravan park at Pt.Parham spans many years. Congratulations to you both. A job well done. Your work is appreciated by all those who use the facilities.

DUBLIN HISTORY GROUP REPORT
Plans are well in hand for Dublin’s contribution to S.A. History Week Celebrations.
The interest from former residents has been most encouraging, not only because of the days activities, but they will be able to re visit their former home town and be able to re kindle old friendships ,all at the same time.
The older generation numbers have diminished quite considerably over the past few years. It is so unfortunate that already several have left us that were so supportive of preserving the areas history in the early days from July 1997. One of the group’s foundation members, Doss Collins nee Dorothy Carslake left us suddenly in 2002.
Doss would be so proud of what the group has achieved in the past decade. The precious memories, that have been long forgotten, are relived once more, when the senior members of the community, both past and present, get together reminiscing while looking at the photo albums, scrap books, histories of pioneer families etc. It is just so wonderful to see former friends re live the old days.
Jeffrey Starr, a long standing Dublin resident kindly offered to erect two historical cairns to identify where the former Anglican Church once stood and the history of the former Methodist Church that is now the residence of Andrea and Phillip Brow today.
After John Tillack the Manager, Infrastructure & Engineering Services had passed the project, Loretta Aiken and Andrea and Phillip Brow agreed to both being erected, the positions on the verges out side their homes marked, Jeffrey had the stone work for the cairns completed by Easter Saturday. The stones were gathered from Ray George’s former property. The History Group committee are very pleased that David Virgin has accepted our invitation to be the Master of Ceremonies for the 27th of May Celebrations. David Cook of Balaklava is arranging to have the information plaques cast.
David is also donating two vases set into matching granite, to be fixed in front of the plaque at the Dublin Cemetery listing the names of the residents that are known to be buried there but their plot numbers were never recorded .by May 27th.

There is only a small quantity of the History Group’s first publication in 1998, of Dublin Yesterday and Today remaining. Together with our second book Memories of Dublin and the Mallala District Council’s publication Life around the Light will be a available for sale on May 27th. These books are available from the Dublin General Store seven days a week.

At long last the grant application, requesting help from the Commonwealth Government with finance for the History Group Community Complex, is now completed. If everything goes to plan, it will be lodged in Canberra by the end of April. Then the wait begins.

The collection of donated prizes for the History Group’s annual Christmas Raffle has commenced. The committee are so appreciative for the continued support from both the business sector and residents, both past and present, for their donations that we have continued to receive over the years. The raffle is one of our major money raisers for each year.

There will be two new photographs hung in the Dublin Hall in the near future. Joel Prime’s, (whom which Prime Beach was named after), has been on display for several years.
Charles Webb (Webb Beach was named in his honour), will now join him, and thanks to the History Trust of SA we are now able to display a photograph of Governor Sir Richard Graves MacDonnell who gave the Hundred of Dublin , and Dublin township their names in honour of his birth place, Dublin, Ireland.

Programmes, published by the History Trust of SA for History Week Celebrations from 20th to 27th May, are available to read at the Council Office, Cabri. Centre and the Dublin General Store.

A USB Drive has now been purchased by the group thanks to the History Trust of SA grant last December.

LOWER NORTH GUN CLUB

At our last shoot in March we were pleased to welcome eight stevedores from P & O Port Adelaide. From all reports they had a great time and will be back with their friends at the April shoot.
The Lower North club has been in operation for some fifteen years at Lower Light. We are among the smallest club membership; however our achievements are higher than our big brothers. The following is just some of our achievements over the years.
We had three juniors represent us at both state and national levels: then all three competed at international events with one going on to be an Olympian (my daughter Lisa)
Our small club won the Club of the Year at the Tasmanian Nationals against shooters from all over Australia. At state level, we have had three members represent our club all at the same time in state teams. Lower North members have won at least five national titles over the years. In addition, we have had in the past members who have been presidents of both the National and State bodies, referee examiners, Olympic judgers and coaches.
When you consider our membership is only twelve, we do very well for ourselves. It is with great pride that I am a shot gun shooter and a member of this great club. If you ever want to try our sport do hesitate to ring me. The club is available for hire by sporting bodies, social clubs or one on one, ammo and guns are available for hire. The range is fully floodlit for skeet and trap ,and has voice release targets. Shooting is by appointment only by phoning Ron Smith Manager

JUNE
Historical Happenings
June 13th 1991 The family fun day held at the Dublin Institute on Sunday June 2nd, realised a profit of $1,500-00 which will be used for improvements to the oval.

Although the rain was a welcome sight for the farmers, it created a quagmire on the roads leading to the Institute and so attendances were low. The cold weather was kept at bay by consuming several flagons of port.

June 20th 1979 Ray Dyer recorded the fasted time in the state in the Dublin Pigeon Club’s race from Carrieton. His bird recorded 32.883 metres per second. It is the fifth occasion in the past two years that a Dublin Bird has recorded the fastest SA time.

June 22nd 1962 High speeds and good times were features for the SA Go– Karting Championships at Dublin yesterday. Bob Collins clocked about 24.3 seconds per lap together with two other drivers.

Chit Chat
When yours truly collected her mail a couple of weeks back, included was a most attractive envelope from Vietnam. On opening the letter, to my surprise it had not been posted overseas by a friend on holidays, but from a friend from Long Plains sending his article for the Dispatch. Yes I was surprised.

The weather for the four days of Easter was just perfect for everyone. Pt Parham Social Club Committee was kept very busy on the Saturday evening and for the annual Easter Day celebrations. There were six stalls, attractive hats, Easter eggs, enjoyable food, good company and more.
.
On Easter Saturday the Dublin Hotel hired an excellent two piece band to entertain its patrons. They had a very good dance beat and those present enjoyed the music, but it is a pity the hotel is not large enough to house a small dance floor.

The new owners of the Dublin Fodder Store Julie, John and daughter Sarah-Jane Hurrell have made some changers to the layout of the store, but basically nothing has changed and the service is first rate.

On March 20th Helen and Gerry Gramazio celebrated their Silver Anniversary They celebrated by going to Adelaide and enjoying a romantic weekend together.
Congratulations, from all your friends and customers.

April 18th people came from near and far to attend Terry Jenkins's clearing sale. The very large crowd bided vigorously for many items which is surprising considering that Australia is in the grip of the worst drought in history.

Ryan Virgin turned eighteen years on 24/3/07 had dinner with family with friends then went on to the Casino

April 16th Dublin Cricket Club Representatives, David Virgin and David Gill, met with Steve Bateman and John Tillack representing the Mallala District Council to discuss the proposed upgrading of the Dublin’s Oval, the surrounding grounds and the club rooms.

In early April one of the wall rods broke in the Dublin Institute Supper Room resulting in three frames being damaged and glass broken but they will be restored by the 27th May, no damage to the photos

Mallala KESAB
It started as a discussion at the local KESAB branch meeting on 27 September 2005, about tidying up and putting out seating at the local cemetery. Someone at the meeting mentioned the unmarked graves, and a project, to little enthusiastic response, was begun. At the next meeting, it was proposed the secretary contact Council CEO for permission to mark the graves & place seating, and to see about plans for the old part of the cemetery.
October meeting brought no plans, but John Griffiths began arrangements for seating, and by February seating and tree pruning occurred, thanks to John and Malcolm Dunstan, and free help from Adelaide Plains Transport re material delivery. Council advised the group that they needed to be advised about any project. Some members, including Heather Konzag and Rosemary Jenkin continued work, consulted Council records, and managed to discover names of 40 or so relevant deceased persons. Work continued, enthusiasm lifted, and now, after much work and some expense (assisted by a generous donation of $500 from Council), the project is ready.
All interested families, friends, community and dignitaries are invited to come along on 6th May at 2.30pm to have a look at what’s been done out at the cemetery. Credit to all the members involved. Afternoon tea will be served at the Mallala Bowling Club afterwards.

COMMUNITY DEVLOPMENT BOARD BUS TO ELIZABETH
The Community Bus needs the support of the community to continue.
We have a large bus that has proven to be a great asset with its under-carriage storage for those passengers who do a lot of shopping, and for the residents with walkers. It has made it possible for you all to continue to support the bus service so much easier. Price—$8.50 return. This year children will be able to travel free of charge. The committee made this decision in the hope it will encourage mother’s to join our friendly group every four weeks.

MID NORTH JUNIOR TENNIS DIVISION 2 CHAMPIONS

On the 24th March the Mid North Junior Tennis held their grand final at the Mallala courts, with Long Plains Division 2 team playing against Hamley Bridge. After a season of extreme heat, in which not one, but two games were cancelled due to the high day temperatures, we were so glad when we saw the weather forecast for cooler weather on the Friday, but we did not bargain on a taste of winter, parents were rugged up to the other extreme. Boy was it cold!
Our local Long Plains team comprised of Ross Sharer, Carissa Daniel, Daniel Brewster, Shelly Tynan and stand by player Corey Sharer. The kids played well all season before winning the ultimate goal— the Grand Final.
A very proud Mum Rosie Brewster
Congratulations to you all

Marcus Strudwicke
Chairman of Mallala
District Council Report

The past couple of months have been a busy time, with a number of events and activities to attend, apart from the usual meetings and committees. At the end of February I attended another successful Strawberry Fete at Parham.
March was particularly busy, with a range of activities associated with the Adelaide Plains Cup Festival. This just gets bigger and better. The weekend commended with a breakfast at Owen on the Friday. Saturday was ‘taste the Adelaide Plains’ at Virgara Winery in Angle Vale, and then a civic luncheon in Balaklava. The day ended with a sensational ‘tattoo’ event, “Castles of the Adelaide Plains” also in Balaklava. On the Sunday, the Council was well represented in the Adelaide Plains Marketing Marquee at the racecourse.
In April I attended the Opening Ceremony of the Pistol Australia 50th Anniversary National Shooting Championships held at the range at Korunye. I was pleased to be able to attend this event and represent the Council as part of the official ceremony to launch the championships. The event was officially opened by The Honourable Pat Conlon, representing the Premier, with David Fawcett and Rob Kerin also in attendance. I used the occasion to promote the local area and wider region. It was also my first opportunity to inspect the ranges, and was impressed by the overall quality of the facility. The Championships involve individual competitions in a range of categories, as well as State team competitions. The competitions also form part of the selection process for the Olympics.
Also in April I attended the launch of the Barossa Councils new Council Administration and Chambers in Nuriootpa. I took the opportunity to tour the new facility, which is an impressive modern functional space. Environmentally sensitive design, incorporating natural lighting, and rainwater collection and reuse, combine with latest technology to create a building that will serve the Barossa region for many years to come.
In the middle of April the LGA conference and General Meeting was held over three days. The day prior I was in Adelaide as guest of the Lord Mayor for a tour of new developments that provide services particularly to residents of regional areas. This was also an opportunity to meet with other Regional Mayors and Chairs, and was followed in the evening by a civic reception in the Lord Mayors parlour.
At the time of writing I expect to finish off a very busy couple of months by attending the reopening of the Mallala Museum on April 30th, which I have been looking forward to with great anticipation.

WINDSOR WISPERINGS
Jim Lindner and son in-law Steven Roberts have reported that they are pleased they decided to advertise in this publication .Collectively they have obtained several jobs through their advertisements. There have been several such reports to us over the past two years, or so. Together with enquires from interested residents Have you heard any complaints about?-—or we need some work done and am thinking of contacting ——
The committee do like to have feed back, whether it is in reference to our advertisements, the unintentional mistakes that do happen at times, or a suggestion for improving our publication. We like to hear, no matter what the comment is, good or bad.

Makayla Ailmore (Lois Prime’s granddaughter) won one each of the gold, silver and bronze medals at the State School Swimming competitions in March. David Franks and Brett Jenkin were two other Mallala Primary School students that made it to the finals.
Congratulations to the three of you.

The Easter Day egg hunt at Windsor was a great success, about twelve children were kept very busy searching for eggs. The large Windsor bred Easter Bunny Jimbo was very popular, entertaining everyone for well over an hour and distributing prizes Thank you Uncle Jim for making Easter Day so enjoyable for all the kids again this year, both young and old

After six months of either being confined to a wheel chair, using crutches or having to use a walking stick all the time, it is good to see Barbara Kennedy walking with her stick only at times now.
Barbara spends hours making all kinds of cards and gifts for her family and friends. For Easter, Barb decorated this egg with the time consuming art of quilling for her parents they were delighted with their .lasting gift.

Young Samantha Scott has cleaned up in the show ring once again, coming home with many ribbons. What a great feat for such a young horse woman and particularly seeing 2006/7 was her first season.

Have you seen the new Granny in town, out walking with a lovely blue pusher???

Don’t forget about the Windsor Library. Pop in and visit Barbara any Sunday morning from 10am—11am and have a brose through the ever changing selection of books for young and old, or the magazines. Why buy The Women’s Weekly, Women’s Day etc when you can borrow them free of charge from the library, or the videos and taped novels for those who have difficulty reading. Being an avid reader herself, Barbara is always willing to either help or advise you on any query you may have. So why not visit her next Sunday or the next?? You will not regret it I assure you.

MALLALA POLICE REPORT

Name: Scott TRENAMAN
Age: 37 years
Position: Brevet Sergeant (O/C Mallala Police)
Years as Police officer: 5
I am the youngest of 8 children, most of which are living all around Australia. I am a father of two girls aged 3 and 8 and I was born in Whyalla, South Australia. I have lived in this steel making township for most of my life. I have previously worked in the steel works (BHP, now known as One Steel) as a process operator rolling steel into structural shapes and later completed an adult apprenticeship as a fitter and turner. Since this time I have completed my qualifications as mechanical engineering draftsman and that for most of my drafting career utilised computer technology to create technical drawings.
Policing has always been a primary ambition for me and as I was in a rut at the end of 2001 with my drafting career, I applied and joined the South Australia Police in early 2002. My first posting was back to Whyalla and I have worked in roles of general patrols, O/C Tactical Teams for Liquor Licensing and Traffic Policing. For the past two years prior to winning the Mallala Police position, I was fortunate enough to relieve the Officers in Charge at Iron Knob, Cleve, Cowell and Kimba and as such now have a strong passion for small station / community policing.

LONG PLAINS MEMORIAL HALL DANCE REPORT
The dance that was held on the afternoon of the first of April was most
successful. Sixty enthusiastic patrons travelled from Pt. Pirie, Eudunda, Clare, Curamulka the Barossa Valley, Adelaide, and closer sources. Seven hundred dollars was raised for our hall Peter Hutchens from the Gawler Town Band provided the music much to the enjoyment of all present, as they danced on the recently upgraded dance floor. Local residents did the work of sanding to resurfacing the floor in preparation for the same volunteers to apply the sealant that has been guaranteed to with stand the heaviest of future use.
The Department of Community and Families provided some Finance towards the hire of the sander and the sealant for which we are all very grateful. The Long Plains Ladies Hall Guild led by Val Daniel organized the delicious afternoon tea that was supplied by the visitors. The ladies guild maned a trading table. The takings for the day totalled $700 that will help the hall funds no end

WE HONOURED OUR VETERANS ON ANZAC DAY

There were four dawn services conducted with in the Mallala District Council area and all were well attended.
Mallala War Memorial service was one of the largest gathering of residents and Air Force Personal from RAAF Base Edinburgh that the majority of residents can remember, (not taking into account when the Air Force was based at Mallala. during WW2). There were 170 adults and children present with 25 WRAF personnel [all in uniform] at the service that was conducted by the Rev. Karen Sands. The RSL were so pleased that their kitchen has just been recently remodelled because they served 188 delicious breakfasts
Port. Parham’s service was held in front of the Club Rooms along side the Australian flag pole where 20 residents found Jim Cody’s form of service very interesting. Breakfast was served in the club rooms afterwards
Thompson Beach. The Rev. Brian Polkinghorne conducted the service by their Australian flag pole, before 35 residents. After the service a barbeque and chat was enjoyed by everyone.
Two Wells War Memorial service was the largest one that residents could remember. Like Mallala there were a number of young families present including their children all rugged up. The service was coordinated by Tony Flaherty and 200 plus residents were present at 6-15 am. Not only was the Australian Anthem sung but the New Zealand Anthem as well, which is really a great inclusion. The Gun Fire Breakfast was enjoyed at the Two Wells Community Centre.
The morning was a little chilly and the long awaited rain still stayed away. By the time the veterans were ready to march in Adelaide at 10pm a lovely autumn day had developed.

Philip Brow of Dublin had a busy night on the 24th April as he was one of the Air Force Cadet Instructors responsible for the Cadets on duty at the War Memorial in Adelaide. The following day saw him marching in the ANZAC Parade with the Cadet Band, playing the Bass Drum. The band went through twice so he was pleased to sit down afterwards.

If you have been to the website you will see it is changing weekly with more information and photos on it. The Dublin Dispatch has now being added in an edited version, just the articles.
Here are some quick statistics on the website for April, Saturday is the most popular day to look at it between 9.00 to 11.00 p.m. Interestingly enough for the countries looking at it, Australia and United States are almost equal, Australia slightly ahead and Canada is next. Most visitors put in the web address in directly but Google is the next way to find it. The War Veterans are the most visited pages.

BINGO NEWS
Although there were a number of the regular players who did not attend the Maundy Thursday night bingo because of going away for Easter ,but those who did enjoyed themselves and the Easter eggs that the Easter Bunny left for everyone. In hindsight we should have moved the night to the next week. We will next time. There are the residents that would not miss their bingo the first Thursday of each month and then there are the residents that come when they are able. And occasionally we have a visitor or two. Pat McCann, Ron Smith and Dot Leak generously donate their time to call for us. At the moment there are normally three full tables, possibly four tables occasionally, it would be great to have another table regularly. There is supper and a cup of tea or coffer provided free of charge and everyone is home before ten o’clock (depending how far one has to travel). We are always pleased to welcome everybody. Why not come along and join in ? It is an enjoyable night and there is an old saying The more the merrier.
Hope to see you on the 3rd May (and 7th June)
