In late October the Cricket Club were awarded $48,200-00 from the Federal Government’s Water Smart funding. The finance is required to purchase two 50.000 Litre tanks, purchasing a pump for pumping water from the dam, erection of a shed to secure the pump, fencing around the tanks and piping and the required fittings to carry the water from both the dam and tanks to water the oval. This money will now ensure that our oval will not look dead and uninviting during future cricket seasons, but will now be a lush green colour twelve months of the year.

NOVEMBER

HISTORICAL HAPPENINGS
November 17th 1996 The Dublin Community Club sponsored a well-attended and successful Auction at the Dublin Institute Grounds. Former resident and popular Gawler Market Auctioneer Robin Wasley very capably took charge of the days proceedings. David Virgin, Deane Freebairn and Bob Thompson were the auctioneer’s runners for the day. Ginny Virgin,
Pat McCann and Pat Thompson were the clerks.
Early November1999 The Artful Dragon was opened on the corner of Old Pt. Wakefield Road and South Terrace by talented Jacqui Webb.

HAPPENINGS

To celebrate the unbelievable AFL grand final win by Geelong over Port Power a resident/s flew a small Geelong flag from Dublin’s main street flag pole. The gesture was a very appropriate one. The flag was flown up side down.
Fourteen organizations are delighted that they have been successful with their applications for assistance from the M/D/C/ Community Partnerships Committee last month There are very few residents who actually know who represents the community on this council committee.
Michael Dimasi with his two children, Ryan aged two years and the latest addition to Michael and Michelle’s family Gabriella Emily, born the 15th August, weighing 7lb 6 ozs. and 50 cm in length.
A very proud dad

The new Dublin Fruit & Veg, shop is expected to be open for business the first week of November or shortly after. Jim has waited along time for the additional space and the new shop’s Grand Opening. Jim built and opened the existing shopping complex 27th October 1982.giving him the honour of being the longest sole trader in Dublin since Ernie Collins and his family who originally arrived in Dublin in 1946 The new store is another great addition to Dublin’s main street. Congratulations and the best of luck in the new store.
Abby Munzer and Gracie Paech were delighted that their photographs were featured on the front page of the Plains Producer newspaper, enjoying themselves at this years Balaklava Show
Mid October the Dublin Cricket Club members rallied to the call of re grassing the Dublin Oval. It is commencing to look greener—no it is not my imagination—but a good rain on the oval would not go amiss although some farmers would not appreciate it just at present.
21 representatives from the various M/D/C committees attended the September council meeting. The deputations were in support for each chairperson of each of the seven remaining committees to be elected and not automatically allocated to the council representative. Gwenda Griffiths spoke on behalf of the Mallala Museum, Margaret Tiller the Greening Group, Pat Thompson Dublin Institute Committee, and Keryn Laikve read Ann Porter’s submission for the M/D/C Community Development Board.. Steven Leak posted the Windsor Institute’s earlier.
Margaret Jenkins and Gwen Secomb (Gwen spoke) in support of the niche wall at the Shannon Cemetery
After workman at the Dublin Hotel had knocked the front wall down, and the floor was broken up. The workmen were digging out the cellar window (that was located at ground level) when a very large, long brown snake confronted them. The length has varied somewhat, depending, who one is talking to, but what is fact, no one was bitten and the snake will not bite anyone either now.
Keith Earl was just so proud of his A Grade Mallala football team, (and still is for that matter), after they won this years A Grade Grand Final .It will be remembered as one of his greatest achievements. Congratulations Keith.

DUBLIN HISTORY GROUP REPORT

It is so disappointing that at the end of 2007 we still do not know if the powers that be in Canberra, agree with us that the proposed Dublin Community Centre project application is worthy of Government support. Now that the election has been called, it more than likely will be at least March of next year before we are notified of the board’s decision. We have to think positive still; at least we have not been rejected as yet.
The Windsor Market was very successful again this year. The History Group members were very pleased that we were once more apart of this annual, friendly, local event, this year. Thankyou to the Windsor Institute Committee for arranging this eagerly awaited annual event for the community.
Dublin resident Peter Fitzpatrick, kindly donated the $100-00 required to purchase the replica medals that Sargent Cecil Norman Patterson of Lower Light, was award for his courageous service in WW1.The medals, a copy of the citation and photo of his grave in France, was great fully arranged by one of the volunteers at the Keswick Barrack’s Military Museum. Cecil’s photo is one of the twelve soldiers honoured in the framed photographic collection that hangs proudly in the Dublin Institute and to our knowledge is the only local WW1 veteran to be awarded the Military Medal for bravery.
Helen Smith a Management Consultant, who has been engaged by Council on several occasions over the past few years, (including work for both the History Group and the Mallala Museum), has been instrumental in the History Group being recipients of her father ‘s expertly crafted wooden baskets etc. that he makes in his spare time, Des donates them to various people that can put them to good use. Originally, Helen kindly brought us ten, that grew to an additional thirty, and then another eight with three handsome toy boxes. Now Des is making an additional twenty. Barbara Kennedy and Beverly Jones are artistically painting and decorating these baskets, that will be on sale at the Paddy’s Market and the Dublin General Store filled with sweets, or turned into a dolls carry basket complete wit
We are delighted Eric Sutton has just completed a counter and table for us—some made from second hand wood— but one would never know, both pieces would be an asset in any home
Thankyou Eric, you have been very generous with your time to the History Group.
The History Group has received some very generous donations and Photographs to copy over these past few weeks Tomatoes and capsicum plants from Woodstock Nursery, and pansy’s and lobelia plants from Life Time Nurseries. Mulberries for jam from Ailmor’s, Christmas sweets from Jim Smyth, photographs from Grace Woodgate, a quantity of old Carslake photos from the late 1800s-early 1900s, (Oh if only Doss Collins could see them) Fabric from a ware house in Adelaide (most of which we past on to Avon Craft), Allan Parker some great family photographs. Several residents have left pots at PT’s front door, and then there were several bags of white elephant stall items left as well. Washed and de labelled jars are always welcome too. Thank you to everyone.
The History Group members wish to thank the Mallala District Councils Community Partnership
Committee Programme for agreeing to our application for $350-00 to purchase a Laminator together with required materials to utilise it.
The Annual Christmas Raffle books for 2007are now available in the shops (General Store, Dublin Meat Store, Dublin Roadhouse and the Dublin and Lower Light Hotels) A number of residents have kindly agreed to take a book or two for us once again this year, and of course tickets are available from all members. There are $ 800-00 worth of generously donated prizes, so why not buy a ticket, you could be lucky and win one of the fourteen prizes and help the History Group at the same time.

DUBLIN SENIOR CITIZENS UPDATE

On October 11th five of our members plus bingo fans Trina Williams and her friend Vanessa rose early to travel to Melbourne by bus for a weekend of playing just Bingo. What an experience!!
In total there were forty-five players from Adelaide, Para Hills and Dublin Districts. Foe two days we played four sessions at various venues around Melbourne, with between five hundred and one thousand players per session. Wish we could attract those kinds of numbers at 10am on Tuesdays.
The ever enjoyable Annual Long Plains Red Cross Luncheon and Fashion Parade was the other October outing for our club members. October 25th took us to visit the Williamstown Seniors Club for a BBQ lunch and an afternoon of bush poetry and entertainment. We all enjoy visiting other clubs for a chat and swapping good ideas.
Late in November is our Christmas luncheon at the Regency Park School of Catering . Last year we all admired the service and good food that was provided by the students that the decision was made to visit them ounce again this year.
There is a new committee at the Pt. Parham Sports and Social Club and we wish Darrell and Lyn and the committee every success for the coming year .Do not forget Bingo at 8pm each third Friday of the month.
I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of all our members to wish you all a safe and happy Christmas and New Year.
Hope to see you all again in February. Val Cody

DECEMBER

HISTORICAL HAPPENINGS
November 2002 there was a successful meting held comprising of various organizations with in the Dublin District based upon the aim of Let’s get all the people involved in a major event over two days on the Dublin Oval, possibly held in late March.2003. It was unanimously decided that they form The Samphire Coast Sports & Carnival Committee to work on Two Days of Fun & Activities. The next meeting was to be held on 5th February at 7-30pm 2003 at the Pt Parham Club Rooms. Can any resident give the Dispatch any information about the above proposed or project ?

RECENT HAPPENINGS
The Faulkner Family have decided to buy a bus to use for their holidays instead of having to book and keep to timetables. This way they can stay as long as the like at a town, or move on if they do not like it.
Bea Chilton was very lucky that he did not loose his hand when he had an argument with a band saw at work on October 22nd.A piece of meat grabbed the blade in the band saw he was using and did a lot of damage to his fourth and little finger when he Instinctively went to release it. Consequently, Beau under went surgery to stitch back his fourth finger and to have two steel pins inserted in his little finger. With six weeks off work Beau is most disappointed he will not be returning to Primo at Pt. Wakefield with his mates in seven days time. Never mind, at least you will be able to after Christmas
Andrew Goss appeared on Channel 10 news at 5pm on October 29th explaining to its viewers how desperate the current situation is with the pig industry at present. With the souring cost of feed and the effect that imported pork is having on the industry at present, if the Government does not step in now, many piggeries will have to close. And they will not reopen
When the new owners connected with the past owners daughter Grace Woodgate there was a lot of comparing to how the inside of the hotel looks today as it was when Gracie’s father Frank owned the hotel ninety years ago. Gee, Grace definitely would not recognise the hotel from the outside what so ever now.
The up grade of the grocery section of the Dublin General Store really has made a difference to the appearance to the area—the room looks
Larger. Laying the identical floor covering, as the main display area, makes the whole shop space appear much larger now, one area flows into the other. The new display units add to the transformation as well. Congratulations you have done a great job, it is money well spent
Wednesday Night Summer Night Bowls commenced 31st October. There are several locals
Participating in this social bowls tournament. In the first 2008 issue it is hoped there will be some photographs and a report on how the teams are progressing on the premiership table.
Darts the other Wednesday night sport commenced a few weeks back, but as to going to press no report on the season progress so far has been received. Hopefully that will be rectified in January though?
Roadwork has also commenced on Fifth Street—Extension to Old Pt.Wakefield Roads Dublin. This roadwork will make a great improvement to those residents living at the northern end of the town.
Jointly the Dublin cricket Club have been awarded the Emu Awards breakfast on Friday
February 29th 2008. This event is the commencement of the Adelaide Cup weekend festivities The Breakfast will be held in the Dublin Institute from 8am

Details to Front Cover
The three soldiers featured on the front cover of this issue were first honoured by the residents of Dublin in 1920 when three round lead light windows, together with three bronze plaques were dedicated in their memory in the former Methodist Church Sunday School room.
Before the church property was sold in 1968, the plaques were removed and Ron Ferme was custodian of them for many years before Ron passed them on to Doss Collin’s who in 1998, spent many hours restoring them to their former glory. Doss then asked Allen Mattens of Webb Beach to make the shaped wooden bases for them, before they were fixed to the northern Dublin Institute wall alongside the Roll of Honour. To this day two of the windows remain intact in the former Methodist Church that is now the proud residence of Andrea and Phillip Brow

When Allen White visited the Dublin Hotel for lunch in early September he was delighted to unexpectedly catch up with Silvia Bubner and Effie Baker who also had decided to pop in to the local for a bite to eat.

Alf Ferme, another former resident who visited recently, (together with his wife Lorna,) catching up with brother Ron and rekindling many old memories, for a few days.

The Nyari family, (formally of Windsor) called in to the Windsor Market to rekindle their old memories and say hullo to former neighbours. Mrs Margaret Nyari Margaret Nyari jnr Mark, William and his partner Jackie Pike
Grace Woodgate (nee Bubner) and Allen White when they visited Dublin in October. This photograph was taken at the Dublin Institute under the photograph of the Dublin Hotel when Grace’s father Frank owned it from 1907-1912. Grace married Roy Bennett in 1938 and although for many years they lived in Broken Hill, they still visited home to spend time with the family. Now they have all past on. Up until Allen offered to drive her, Grace had no reason to bring her back to her birthplace.
Gee, after so many years, did Grace get a surprise!!
Graham & Margaret Ferme’s daughter Joy was married in Victoria in early October. Reg, Alf an Lorna attended the family celebration.
Louise Earl and Cameron Faulkner Jnr. Were married on Saturday 27th October in the garden at the Earl family farm at Windsor. Fortunately there were no strong winds as there had been during the week. The reception was held at the Mallala Football Club Rooms..
Louise is the daughter of Anne-Marie and Keith Earl while Cameron is the son of Cameron Faulkner Snr and Leanne Hilliard of Dublin.

LONG PLAINS RED CROSS BRANCH
Elly, daughter of Kate and Jamie Baker won both the baby competition for our category and first prize for per capita for country branches with only 1-200 in population. Our Elly has had a double win, which was great.
Our baby for this coming year is Jenna Baker, daughter of Mel and Jason Baker of Windsor.
In October we held our Fashion Parade and Luncheon. The parade was by Victoria’s Boutique from Ridgehaven. Once again it was a great success. As Christmas is almost upon us we are coming to a close with a small Melbourne Cup Luncheon followed by a Christmas break up in December. Meetings resume the second Wednesday (13th) of February 2008.
Once again our branch has worked hard to raise funds for Red Cross and a thankyou goes to branch members during the past year and also to members who attend functions at other branches.
As this is the final edition for this year the branch members wish everyone a Happy Christmas & New Year.
Jenny Mc Ardle

Mallala and District Historical Committee
Once again the committee is organizing a Remembrance Day Ceremony to be held at the Mallala Monument on November 11th 2007 at 10.45 am. Reverend Kelvin Benn will officiate and a student from the Mallala Primary School will take part.
Everyone is welcome. Come and remember all who have served in various conflicts, and in peace keeping contingents.
Following the service, a BBQ lunch will be provided for a small cost by the Mallala Museum Committee. It will be held on the lawns of East Reserve in front of the Museum.
Free entry will be provided to the Mallala Museum following the service until the normal closing time of 4.30 pm to view the South Australia History Trust travelling exhibition titled “The Voice of the People: 150 years of Democracy in South Australia”
Australians have been involved in wars, and to some extent were fighting to preserve our democracy.
What is democracy? What does it mean to our history today? What do you know about democracy in South Australia? Come and see the exhibition and find the answers.
A quote from the SA History Trust reads “On 24th October 1856, Governor MacDonnell proclaimed a new Constitution which introduced responsible government to South Australia. The display explores the significance of the Constitution and companion electoral act within the social and political context of the 1850’s. It explores how South Australia came to have such a radical electoral and political system, which included the right of men over 21 years to vote and the secret ballot. The display tells the stories of the people who shaped the act, and it traces the evolution of democracy over the 150 years including the right of women to vote”
During the month of November, the SA History Trust Exhibition will be open to the public for viewing at the Mallala Museum at the following times. No entrance fee.
