DUBLIN DISPATCH JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2009

Thompson Beach Waders
Clarice Aldhouse celebrated her birthday on 4-11-08 at the Dublin Seniors Melbourne Cup luncheon at the Parham Club. Lionel surprised his wife with a lovely large bunch of flowers on his arrival at the club’
Sue Sabby celebrated her half century with a lively party of sixty family and friends at their beach home in early December.
John Walker hosted the Christmas party at his home for fifty members of the Progress Ass.
Kelly Pascoe was forced to return to hospital only weeks after the birth of her third child, Elise. Unfortunately Kelly now has to wait a total of twelve weeks before she is able to drive her car—six weeks after Elise’s birth and a further six weeks after her operation. Understandably Kelly is not happy at being confined to Thompson Beach and reliant on family and friends to take her out. Kelly normally is a very independent lady.
The annual Progress Ass. New Year Festivities was held this year at the Walker residence. The first Dublin Sausage Sizzle for 2009, the waders turn, all their meat had run out by 1-15pm .A good start for the year!
To date, there are now 115 houses at Thompson Beach, with approximately 100 of their occupants being permanent residents. There are a number of really up market homes been erected at this beach settlement over the past twelve months or so, especially in the area known as stage two.

Mallala Museum
The members of the Mallala Museum Committee are enjoying a short but well-earned break over Christmas, with the museum closed on the two Sundays after Christmas. The committee has had another busy year, with regular Sunday openings, as well as the ongoing tasks of cataloguing, cleaning and maintaining the displays.
The month of October saw the museum opening every day, as we welcomed a daily Endeavour Tours mini-bus/ the passengers spent an hour touring the museum before enjoying a guided tour of the town, followed by a fine lunch at the Mallala Hotel.
As we headed into November, the work of eighteen months came to a conclusion, as displays were finalised and panels hung in preparation for the opening of the "Times of Conflict" exhibition. This exhibition highlights the service of the townspeople who served in the Boer War, World War I and World War II, Malaysia and Vietnam. It features many medals, documents, uniforms and the honour boards from the local institutes and local schools, together with numerous interpretive and pictorial displays that tell the story of those who served from the community, or at the no 6 Service Flying Training School. A large crowd attended the official launch, including Council's then Mayor, Steve Kennedy, and Council CEO Damien Moloney. The exhibition was opened by Kate Walsh, Manager of the Community History Unit at the History Trust of SA. Also present was Peter Templeton, who was the designer for the exhibition. Peter used the information and photographs provided to him by the Mallala Museum committee to develop the interpretive panels that accompany the many artefacts, photographs and items of uniform donated to the Museum by the public.
No sooner was the exhibition opened, and it was it was all hands on deck for the annual Remembrance Day Service, which was again organised by Mallala and District Historical committee and held at the Mallala Monument in the centre of the town. Nine personnel from the No 1 Air Defence Squadron, RAAF Base Edinburgh, attended the service and some formed a catafalque party. The service was conducted by Uniting church minister, Rev Geoff Graetz, from Gawler, with two school students. Kimberley Craddock read The Ode and Jarrad Rattray managed the sound system. The children had made wreaths in class and representatives from each class laid a wreath on the monument in remembrance. There was great activity leading up to the service as 182 children marched from Mallala Primary School to the monument in an orderly fashion, escorted by 11 members of staff. Dylan and Bec Stodart from the Mallala Hotel graciously opened their new pergola area in front of the hotel, providing older visitors with a comfortable seat in the shade. Following the service a delicious barbecue lunch was held on the lawns of East Reserve in front of the museum. Mallala and District RSL kindly provided the meat and member Ray Coleman and helpers expertly cooked the barbecue.
As we enter the new year, the committee is pleased to learn it has been acknowledged by the Council as a recipient of the Australia Day award for event of the year. We are also pleased to have been successful in receiving a grant for $3000 from the Department of Veteran affairs, to cover the cost of a cabinet to house our World War One service dossiers, and expand our collections of records to be housed within the cabinet. Others projects to start in the new year include the installation of a new Public Address sound system to improve risk management. The committee is also participating in a Pilot Program through the 'Collections Council of Australia' to facilitate better access to its collections, and this will involve the development of an interactive web site, over the course of the first few months of the year.
No doubt this new year will be just as busy as the last, and we welcome anyone who would like to volunteer, to join us. The running of the museum involves a myriad of different skills and activities, so whatever your abilities, there is sure to a job for you.
As always, the museum is opened every Sunday, and at any other time by prior arrangement. If you have not yet seen the new exhibits, make sure you place a visit to the museum into your diary, perhaps following a fabulous Sunday lunch at the Mallala Hotel.

Windsor Whisperings
The Dublin CFS maned the Sausage Sizzle at the Windsor Market again this year. The aroma that wafted into the hall ensured that everyone was going to enjoy a delicious lunch.
Christmas lights this year really made Windsor a prominent settlement for all those using the Highway that would not normally realise that there are really residents living still in the main street. The Kennedy Family, Carol and Jim Lindner, Steve & Bernie and Mandy Chapman all successfully gave Windsor’s Christmas message to every passer by. Congratulations the street looked great.
Barbara Kennedy opened the library on December 28th , just in case someone wanted to change their books.
But as it turned out, no one wished to take advantage of Barb’s thoughtfulness.
The Ailmore family will be literary living out of suitcases for about the next three months. The reason!
Basically all the furniture has had to be moved in preparation for the salt damp experts to work on the walls of the house from the 5th January. Then, when the rendering has dried out, the painters will be in, then the floor coverings can be laid and finally the furniture can be returned to their correct positions.
What a way to spend Christmas. But ever more interesting will be when someone wants something, and nobody can remember where it was safely put? Just keep telling yourselves, it will be great when all the restoration work is completed and every item is returned to it’s rightful place.!!!

Windsor Guild Second Reunion Luncheon at the Dublin Hotel on November 18th
It was a most enjoyable luncheon, catching up with old friends that we used to see on a regular basis at the Windsor Institute meetings. There was a decision made, that next year’s luncheon will be held on July 25th when there are not as many dinners etc for everyone to attend.

Parham’s Chit Chat
The 2008 New Years Eve celebrations at the club were an outstanding success. —-The club was packed
( I mean packed) until mid night, then gradually the members and friends began to head for home. But of course there were those who continued to welcome in 2009, until the wee small hours of the morning.
There was a great change to Parham’s New Years Day traditional celebrations however.
The committee decided to transfer the Beach Girl Competition to the Australia Day Celebrations.
The reason being, that the New Years Eve festivities is a lot of work for the volunteers who both prepare the food during the day, then continue to work at night. Thus moving the competition to three weeks later means that there is no where the stress of catering for two functions straight on top of one another, there for every one can really enjoy both functions.

NEW TRANSPORT CONCESSIONS FOR SENIORS TRAVELLING INTERSTATE
South Australian Seniors can now access new transport concessions when they travel interstate from 1 January as a new national scheme begins to roll out.
Seniors visiting South Australia can also get concession fares on South Australian public transport providing more incentives for grey nomads to spend their tourist dollars in South Australia.
The Australian Government has offered more than $1.4 million over four years to the South Australian Government so that it can provide concessions to Seniors Card holders who are using public transport services outside their home state.
Until now, South Australian Seniors Cards have only entitled the holder to public transport concessions in South Australia.
The new arrangements mean that seniors travelling interstate can now access cheaper fares on local transport in their destination city. For example a South Australian Seniors Card holder travelling to Sydney can access seniors’ fares on the Sydney Harbour ferry services.
Or if travelling to Melbourne they receive cheaper fares and enjoy the unique experience of seeing the inner city and suburbs on Melbourne trams.
South Australian seniors now also get concession fares on bus and train travel in other states and territories through the scheme. Likewise, seniors visiting South Australia will get concession fares on SA public transport.
A uniform system across Australia will help seniors travel interstate to see family and friends. Making it more affordable for seniors to travel within Australia will also help communities and businesses that are dependent on tourism.
The scheme commenced on 1 January in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory.
Discussions with the Western Australian and Queensland governments are continuing. In the meantime, from 1 January 2009 Queensland began offering concessions on its urban public transport to interstate concession holders.

Long Plains Red Cross Report
The members met at the Dublin Hotel on the 10th December for their Christmas luncheon. Members exchanged gifts and wished everyone a very Happy Christmas season and everything of the best for the New Year.
It was a busy day for members as they also catered for afternoon for those who attended John Stevenson’s funeral at the Dublin Institute.
Some members who are part of the Windsor Uniting Church worship team went to the Butler’s View Hostel that afternoon to lead the Church service and enjoy a time of fellowship over the afternoon tea.

Dublin History Group Report
The preparation for our stall at the Paddy’s Market was very time consuming, but we were able to present a Christmas well stocked stall last November. The quantity of our large padded stockings and baby floor rugs would never have been possible without the help of Sue Pearce who stayed at PT’s for a week, from the South East. It was all worth it, by the time the 24th of December arrived there was only one large stocking, two small ones and two baby rugs remaining.
We were delighted to receive word (just before Christmas )from the SA History Trust that the $400.00 that we had applied for to finance a large number of photographs to be scanned, had been granted.. Thankyou a great Christmas present.
The Tiller / Field families combined their deferred Christmas family lunch and
Margaret’s special birthday celebration to December 28th ( Marg’s birthday).
The family hired the Mallala Institute that really looks lovely when it is decorated.
It was a truly memorable day for everyone—especially Margaret.
Everyone can now look forward to the next special family birthday (that has a zero in it), to celebrate all together once again.
A belated Happy Birthday Margaret from us all. May there be many more.
The bingo will resume on February 5th at 7.15pm followed by the first Thursday of each month there after. The special Christmas Bingo was enjoyed by everyone. Pat McCann and Dot Leak were our callers for the night. It was unfortunate that Jim and Val Cody and Ron Smith (our other Senior Cits callers) were unable to attend. The History Group are indebted to the Seniors for their commitment to call for us, no matter what the weather is, two of these four callers at least always attend the community event. If it was not for them, there would be no bingo for us to enjoy. Thankyou all very much.

We are most appreciative for all the hours that Helen Smith’s father, Desmond spends making wooden baskets in variable seizings for us. This year his latest design, the wishing well, of which he made 27 in total were used for the table decorations for the 2008 year seven graduates presentation at the Mallala Primary School.
Joe and Julie Ward volunteered to burn the markings onto them, and then finally they were decorated and filled with sweets by us. The completed wells looked great, it was a combined effort that was appreciated by both students and teachers alike.
The wooden baskets were individually painted by Beverly Jones and Barbara
Kennedy, four of the bears were donated, Peter Smyth donated six kilos of
Christmas mixture to fill them,
Keryn Laikve, Anne Marie Paach , Christine Hunter and the committee
donated or the History Group financed the sweets for the 100 odd Christmas trees made ,and were all sold. Thankyou all so very much for all your combined support.

It will not be too long before council will have to widen the narrow, one way track that is the only access to all the properties.
Maurice Woodley is spending his school holidays being Phillip Brow’s right hand helper. It is difficult for students to obtain some work experience during their school holidays in this day and age, and especially when the boss lives in the town It is, by all accounts, working very well. Phillip has an offsider and Maurice is learning just how much work is entailed in looking after wooden floors. .
Ross Mc Lean has commenced erecting a new fence around their Seventh Street property. Besides getting everything, as they would like it inside, Ross has already laid some concrete across the rear of the house

Dublin Institute Committee Update
Encouraging signs for hire ring the hall for 2009 look promising with the first booking on January 3rd. In mid February/ early March the upgrading of the supper room will commence. In their 2008/9 budget the council allocated $2000.00 towards the floor being resurfaced and the new floor covering, followed by a new refrigerator being installed with part finance being granted by the Mallala Council’s Community Partnership Programme in 2008. The committee have raised the remaining finance required to complete the project. The committee’s intention is to replace the bar as well in the coming months. The existing bar has served the community well over many years, but it does need a face lift. More than likely the frame work will remain, it will only be the front cladding and the bar top replaced .The work will not restrict the hall being used for bingo or a public display/ public meeting etc. but the use of the hall for a private function will not be possible for March through to possibly early April.
The Fighting Forces Comfort Fund Embroidery will be taken to Artlab ASAP to be restored. Allan White has donated $1000 & the Veteran Affairs $250-00 required for this work to be done.

The number of people who attended the Christmas Paddy’s Market in November was a little disappointing for the stall holders, but for those people who did visit they left with their bags full. The winners of the raffle were (1)R. Makings (2)Michael Schaffer (3) B. Miller. Thankyou to those who purchased a ticket and donated the prizes .

Obituaries
John Stevenson

14-4-1938 to 4-12-2008
On Wednesday 10th December at 2pm we were at the Dublin Institute attending John’s funeral, more fondly known as John the Pom.
He had fought a year long battle with cancer which he lost on the 4th December at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
His wife, Karen read a eulogy that she had written and re– written so many times that she probably didn’t need to read it as much as recite it. Those present were then asked if anyone would like to say a few words. No one was brave enough to stand, though so many of us would dearly love to have had enough courage to have spoken of the amazing man who had touched and enriched so many of our lives.
He was born an Englishman and in the truest sense of the word, he was a gentleman, yet he became a true blue Aussie through his spirit and standards. Karin was so right when she said that sitting still wasn’t something John was capable of ! John was fitter and a harder worker than many men half his age or less, and was there to help so many people, without expectation of payment or even a favour in return.
Tears flowed freely, not only from his family but, from so many of us in the community who realised that we had lost a true friend and mate.
Beer and Barbies were his relaxation but only when the days work had been done, and usually only when there was not enough daylight left to still be working outside!
John’s strength of character, his ability to adapt to life’s changes and overcome the hurdles placed in his way should offer inspiration to us all, and for those of us lucky enough to have been referred to as his friends, lets be grateful to have shared in his life, and I am sure we will all treasure the memories we have of Pommie John.
Our hearts go out to his children, grandchildren, extended family, and especially to Karen, Samantha, and John Boy
Stories of John’s kindness, spirit and good nature will echo in pubs and around barbies for many years to come.

31 August 1925— 12 November 2008
Our Mum was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Grandma passed away peacefully at the Ira Parker Nursing Home at Balaklava where she had lived for the past three years.
Mum loved living in North Terrace, Dublin for 26 years, where she made many friends. Joining the Dublin Senior Citizens Club was great for Mum; she enjoyed attending their meetings each Tuesday in the Dublin Hall and joining them on their bus trips. It was so good that we only lived around the corner from her, here in Dublin. We were able to just call in on our way out shopping to ask if she needed anything, Jason and Kelly saw so much more of her and their
Grandfather when he was alive.. They, like us would frequently just pop around for a while when we had some spare time. And if Mum needed us for ever what reason , we were there within a couple of minutes.
Mum was laid to rest at the Dublin Cemetery with her loving husband Frank.
She will be missed greatly by us all.

Windsor Uniting Church News

Windsor Uniting Church - 135 years old on 21stDecember.
The first church services were conducted in the homes of Mr Francis Diment and Mr George Baker. Then in 1873 the Church was built. Miss Sarah Baker laid the foundation stone on 30th September that year, and sadly the stone has been missing for several years. Was it removed when the porch was added in 1910 or could it have been removed at a much later date than that? Does anyone have any photos of the Church that include the foundation stone or photos taken when the front porch was added in 1910. or could it have been moved at a much later date than that?
Does anyone have photos of the church that include the foundation stone or when the porch was completed by Mr Cheney.
Christmas Carols Service at Windsor Uniting Church 17th December
Rev Geoff Graetz lead a very happy evening of carol singing and the good news stories of Christmas, some in modern day language from the Aussie Bible. Gabrielle Wink told us her story about why she enjoys Christmas and most important a reminder to all of us about the REAL reason for the Season. Gwen Secomb read a modern version of the Nativity story called email Jesus@Bethlehem. Special thanks must go to Dot Leak for her cheerful decorations in the Church and to Jill Pearson for her beautiful hand stitched Christmas hanging for the Church. Offerings for the evening will go to the Christmas Bowl appeal with the many wonderful overseas aid projects and to the CWA Emergency Appeal to assist South Australian families in need. Everyone enjoyed a delicious supper after the service. Young people who attended were given red & green balloons with Jesus is the Reason for the Season written on them.
